I’ve been making autobiographical and memoir comics since 2016. Check out some of my projects here.
In the fall of 2018, I started making shorter comics about my daily life. It was an exercise in both creating stories within boundaries, and in expanding my audience online-- I posted each comic on Instagram, and the immediate feedback motivated me to produce more.
I ended up collecting them in a volume titled Making Time, touching on both the fact that I have to make time in my busy life for comics and other creative pursuits, AND to the many stories I create that touch on the process of making-- the importance of knitting, sewing, and other forms of handwork in my life means that they show up in my comics.
I hope that Making Time will be the first volume in a series of diary minicomics. It was funded through Kickstarter and is available through my Etsy shop.
Key West Diary explores the experience of travel while parenting, following the author on a five day trip she takes with her young daughter to visit old friends in Florida. Through beach visits and bike rides, an awkward party and a presidential encounter, she confronts her past and present identities as an artist, a mother, and a friend, finding magic in the chaos. Reprinted in 2022 with a beautiful full-color cover. Now available on Etsy and Gumroad.
“This is just a gem of a comic, the kind that puts a smile on your face even when the subject matter gets a little tough at times, and it’s a polished and sparkling one thanks to Dietrich’s superb narrative and visual choices.”
This is an 8 page minicomic about my daughter Vivian’s birth that I created just before her fourth birthday. I wrote and drew this over four days at the Center for Cartoon Studies as part of the Cartoon Studio workshop led by Luke Howard and Jarad Greene. Get your copy in my Etsy shop or on Gumroad.
