Elise Dietrich is a Limited-Term Assistant Professor of Portuguese at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Her research examines cultural production in twentieth-century Brazil to trace the relationships of power that underlie broader societal understandings of race, gender, and class. Her work questions how the lives marginalized individuals come to symbolize specific aspects of national identity, and how this symbolism is expressed through literature, popular music, and the media.  Examining these themes reveals key cultural tendencies in Brazilian culture that can further inform our current understanding of complex contemporary dynamics on a global scale.
